BEST OF CARE: MODERN MEDICINE, TRADITIONAL VALUES

A30 Referrals acknowledged a decade in business with colleagues from Cornwall and beyond at a special event in the great outdoors.

More than 100 veterinary professionals from across Devon and Cornwall turned out to celebrate the practice’s 10th anniversary.

Grand day out

Even the Cornish “mizzle” could not dampen spirits, as colleagues and their families enjoyed a hospital tour, barbecue feast and fireworks display.

A30 Referrals launched at Penmellyn Vets St Columb Major Hospital in 2007, following the arrival of Colin Whiting, an advanced practitioner in surgery.

Since then, orthopaedic and spinal surgical cases have formed the majority of caseloads referred from local practices.

The service has since expanded to include a CT imaging service, led by James Christie, and a visiting cardiology and ophthalmology service from specialists Mark Patteson and Jim Carter.

A spokesman said: “It seemed the natural way to celebrate was to bring colleagues together… even if on the day it was waterproofs and wellies, rather than rounders and sunshine. The vagaries of Cornish weather are well known to all down here.”

A presentation was made to RVN Kathy Davies, who has worked at Penmellyn Vets for more than 20 years and been on the surgical nursing team from the outset of the referral business.

Kennel assistant Charlotte Baker, who has worked in inpatient care for more than eight years, was also recognised with an accolade.

The spokesman added: “Both these ladies represent the dedication and commitment present throughout the nursing team, and their colleagues raised a cheer in their honour.”
